Fighting The Fight Of Faith

February 20, 2012

We all have afflictions and circumstances in our lives we wish to overcome and be free of. They might be a negative attitude or a drug, alcohol or porn problem. In the spirit realmof God there is no difference in bad attitudes, getting lit at the pub or looking at porn if Romans 8:1 applies to you. “There is now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for Those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk after the flesh, but walk after (seek) the Spirit”. They simply block us from fully experiencing the peace and blessing Jesus paid for by His sacrifice on the cross! Remove the blockage and begin to flow in His grace, peace and power. How to walk after the Spirit is the question.

Look at the examples of words, attitude and thought as seed that grow. In life drinking may be less acceptable than a negative attitude. I cannot in most cases go to jail as a direct result of my attitude, however, after drinking I can if I choose to drive! In a matter of minutes from the conception of the thought (or seed) to go have a drink I can be at the corner pub. I have reaped an immediate harvest from thought to action, producing a result. On the other hand, an unconstructive attitude may be a worse condition than alcohol for two reasons. Drinking, drugs or porn produce an immediate result which may open our eyes to a need for change, this is good. However some never understand thought, attitude and words are also seed that grow producing a result. We’ve all heard someone say, I keep getting in trouble when I drink, maybe I need to quit. But few say maybe I need to change what I think, feel or speak about life because we don’t understand that we are responsible for what we think. It is what we feed in thought that grows. Feed life!

In fighting the fight of faith we must see what is being said in John 6:63 “it is the Spirit that gives Life, the flesh profit nothing, the words that I speak to you are Spirit and they are life”. Changing our reference from flesh to Spirit or as written in Romans 8:6 “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace”. These two verses are of the Most foundational in biblical instruction. Understand them and begin to grow in faith peace and Joy. Spiritual mindedness is what we seek to operate in. We must become spiritually minded! In 2Peter 1:2-3 he writes “Grace and peace be multiplied to you (how) in the knowledge of God And of Jesus our Lord, seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to Life and godliness (how) through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and Excellence”. Not by someone who quits the drink or stops having a lousy attitude. Don’t get me Wrong, it is God’s desire for us to be free from those things however not by works of the flesh, By applying spiritual law. Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because Thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee…Ephesians 2:8-9 “for by grace you have Been saved through faith. Not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast”. We must also understand to touch the stove is to get burned.  Apply Common Sense, don’t touch the stove! However some like me do learn the hard way and Continue to go back to get burned until we’ve finally had enough of it.

In time past it was my prayer to God that He would keep me out of the pub! I would move from chair to door wanting to go in the flesh but not wanting to in my spirit. Oh God help me stay Out of the pub! (For me drink always led to something more) I would literally white knuckle it for hours or days and eventually give in to my desire. It was no fun being miserable! On The one hand I wanted to party, on the other the things of God. There I was in the middle of a Worse condition than before I ever asked Jesus to come into my life! Many times I did turn my Back on God but He would not let me go! Instead He showed me James 1:5 “But if any of you Lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, And it will Be given to him”. So I asked.

The Lord began to show me different scripture which enlightened His word to me. Some keywords and verses I found were “It is finished” John 19:30, “without faith it is impossible to Please God, that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6, “faith is the Substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things Not seen” Hebrews 11:1, “if you have Faith as a mustard seed you will say to this mountain Move from here to there and it will move And nothing will be impossible for you” Matthew 17:20 and “by your words you will be Justified” Matthew 12:37. I began to see God Supplied everything to live in victory by the Finished work of the cross, that it must be up to me to get into action, faith action. My position Changed from one who needed victory to one who already had victory!

I began to use the word in prayer, His words rather than my words! My prayers changed From, God keep me from the pub, to a confession of the word such as “old things have passed away and all things have become new”. There is a huge supply of what I call power verses in the bible, find and use them. When the urge (thought) to sin comes employ the power of His word Through your mouth. Fight from a position of victory rather than defeat. The devil has Been conquered by our Lord and Savior’s sacrifice on the cross, right? The only power he has Over us is what we give him! The devil uses our thoughts and emotions to make us think We are out of favor with God turning us to UN belief.  To think we are defeated when we are Not is the great error! We actually allow ourselves to be defeated through ignorance of God’s (Word) power in us, NOT THE DEVIL! I began to confess the words of God in my situations. In Proverbs 18:20-21 it says, a man’s belly (emotions, spirit, soul) shall be satisfied with the fruit of His mouth; and with the increase of His lips shall he be filled. 21 Death and life are in the Power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.  And Mark 7:15 there is Nothing outside a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things (words) which Come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

In 1Timothy 6:12 Paul writes “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold of eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession…. The New Testament was written in Greek and translated into English. English words do not bring the full impact of the Greek meanings and several English words may need to be used in place of one Greek word. Look at this verse in the Greek. Agōnizomai is the Greek word for Fight or to enter a contest, to contend with adversaries and metaphorically to contend, struggle with difficulties and dangers. The word “fight” used in pagan Greece is to refer to a contest of struggle, a battle for the prize in a fight.  The gloves of the Greek boxer were fur lined but on the outside made of ox-hide with lead and iron sewed into it. And the loser in a wrestling match had his eyes gouged out. Now we may have some appreciation of our position in fighting the “fight” (weist). Professed (homologeō) is defined as to say the same thing as another, to agree with, not to refuse, not to deny but to confess and declare. To confess, to admit or declare one’s self or what we profess to be ours, to declare openly, speak out freely, to profess one’s self, the worshipper of one, to praise and celebrate. Profession (homologia) defined subjectively, to whom or what we profess to be ours, what one professes [confesses]. Speak Life!

Ephesians 6:16-17 in all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish All the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 …… and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: Our fight is not physical but invisible or on a spiritual level. This is explained In Ephesians 6:12, for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Remember the devil uses our thoughts and emotions. How? Through wickedness in high places. These high places are not way up in the sky or near the stars as we may think.  They are the space above the ground, the invisible, the spiritual realm. 2Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the Knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Think about what we say as spiritual. Our speech is invisible. After we speak something where does the sound of our voice go? It goes forth into the air, the spirit realm. Remember the power of life is in the tongue. Jesus said the words I speak to you are spirit and they are life. If the words of Jesus are spirit then our words are spirit. It is then our choice to speak the words of life. The power of the tongue, our speech is explained in James 3:2-5 for in Many things we Offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able Also to bridle the Whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths that they may obey us; and we turn About their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven Of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor Listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how great a Matter a little fire kindleth!

As we hide the word in our hearts (meditate on, think about) they become a reference point of Spirit. This is explained in Romans 12:2 and be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. The flesh man reacts in different ways be it anger, laughter, control, power, defeat and more, they are natural reactions. The Spirit man must learn to react in faith of what the word says rather than what we think or feel. I have, what I call power verses written on index cards. I recite them out loud as I drive and other convenient times. This is how I renew my mind and move into transformation. The Greek definition for transformed (metamorphoō) is to change into another form, to transform, to transfigure.  Christ appearance was changed and was magnificent with divine brightness on the mount of transfiguration. That’s for us people if we get out of self and into faith of His ability!

Our position of faith must be in believing what the word tells us rather than thinking I Have faith to accomplish anything. The word says in Romans 4:21 we are fully satisfied and assured that God is able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He promised. Consider Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, And again in 2 Corinthians 5:7, for we walk by faith, not by sight. The devil says you are no good at this. The words says “I have all sufficiency in Christ Jesus” The moment the devil Speaks to me through thought and or emotion, I speak the word of God over that. You get good At it with practice and the freedom Christ paid for on the cross becomes real in your life! Without faith it is impossible to please Him. As you read the word you will come across power Verses. Personalize the verse to suit and write them on index cards and confess them every Day. Use them to replace of your thoughts and emotion that exalt themselves against the Knowledge of God. Watch and see what God will do! Here are A few power verses to get Started with, write a few or all of them on index cards, the ones that make sense to you.
